The First
Piece Wall

When someone comes into the room for the first time, we make a simple invitation: make a small piece. Palm-sized. It can be clay, paper, wood, anything. You write your first name on the back. You write the date. A word, if you want.

"The wall is not about art. It's about having been here."

The piece doesn't have to be beautiful. There's no assessment. Nobody is watching to see what you made. There's clay on the table. There's paper. There's ink. You can spend ten minutes or an hour. You can make a clay sphere the size of a lemon. You can fold paper. You can cut and paste. The only rule is that it fits in your palm.

When the piece is done, you write your first name on the back, today's date, and — if you want — a word or a sentence. Then the piece goes on the wall. Not the wall that changes every week. The First Piece Wall, which doesn't change. It stays there, alongside the pieces of everyone who came before you.

People come back to the room months later and look for their piece. Sometimes they find it quickly. Sometimes it takes a while. As the wall grows, the game changes. In a few years, finding yours will be like finding a person in a very large group photograph.

"In five years it will be thousands."

Come make yours.
